He highlighted recent assaults on federal, state, and local officers. He warned that growing anti-law-enforcement rhetoric is fueling hostility and putting those who protect our communities in greater danger. “Today’s hearing is not about silencing dissent or restricting free speech. It is about responsibility and recognizing that rhetoric has consequences and ensuring that our officers can perform their duties without fear. We are reminded of the dangers they face each year when names of fallen heroes are added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial here in Washington, D.C., which honors federal, state, local, and tribal officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.” — Congressman Garbarino Watch Andrew's Full Opening Statement ANDREW IN THE NEWS The Blue View: Securing America: A Conversation with Homeland Security Chairman Andrew Garbarino "Today, we shine a spotlight on one of the most influential voices shaping America’s approach to security and public safety. As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, Chairman Garbarino discusses the enormous responsibility of leading the committee originally formed to ensure that another attack like 9/11 never happens again. From funding challenges to evolving threats, he provides an inside look at how Congress, federal agencies, and local law enforcement work together to keep our nation safe." Watch the Full Podcast ‘Remaining Vigilant’: Garbarino Wields Powerful Homeland Security Gavel “Everyone felt 9/11, but other states didn’t feel it as much as we did in New York. We really felt it here and still feel it, especially with people still getting sick and dying,” said Garbarino. “Long Island also has a very diverse population; we’re like our own mini country. It’s important to have the perspective of a New Yorker on this committee and leading it.” Garbarino adds that while reactions to problems and crises are the norm, it’s imperative for Homeland Security to be constantly proactive. With a New Yorker leading the committee, 9/11 is still close in the rearview mirror. In that vein, the significance of proactiveness couldn’t be overstated. “We have this proactive thinking. It’s not just focusing on reactions, but focusing on other things to make sure a similar mass casualty event doesn’t happen. That perspective is crucial to leading the committee.” Read the Full Article. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Protecting Homeowners from Flood Insurance Lapses During a House Financial Services Committee hearing this week, Andrew emphasized the urgent need to prevent lapses in the National Flood Insurance Program. He highlighted his NFIP Extension Act, which would provide certainty for homeowners and ensure flood insurance remains stable and accessible. Andrew remains committed to protecting Long Island families from rising costs and maintaining strong coastal resiliency. Votes this week Andrew voted to advance two bills aimed at cutting red tape and supporting America’s small businesses. The Small Business Regulatory Reduction Act requires the SBA to track and report the regulatory costs federal agencies impose on small businesses, while the DUMP Red Tape Act strengthens efforts to eliminate outdated and duplicative regulations. This bill also establishes a “Red Tape Hotline” so small businesses can report burdens directly. Andrew remains committed to reducing unnecessary bureaucracy and helping Main Street businesses grow. Andrew Fights for Fallen Firefighters This week, Andrew joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers in urging congressional leadership to include the Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act in the final FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act. The legislation corrects a long-standing gap in survivor benefits for firefighters who pass away from job-related cancers that cannot be tied to a single emergency incident. Despite years of exposure to smoke, diesel exhaust, and other toxins, many firefighters’ families are unfairly denied federal benefits under current law. By supporting this bipartisan effort, Andrew is standing with the firefighters who put their lives on the line every day and fighting to ensure their families receive the recognition and support they deserve.
