Dear John,
I want to share some updates with you from Congress and across our nation. Here are three things you need to know:
1. The House Appropriations Committee approved Defense spending plans for the coming year. In addition to continuing to fund our Armed Forces, this bill will increase wages for the men and women who serve, strengthen American cybersecurity, and invest in stronger and safer equipment. The bill also emphasizes quality of life for service members by increasing funds for sexual assault prevention programs, childcare for military families, and medical research.
2. Additionally, the Commerce, Justice, and Science financial plan for the coming year was passed in the House Appropriations Committee. This appropriation funds NASA, the National Science Foundation, and other agencies that contribute to American innovation. This year’s CJS bill includes particularly strong investments in common-sense police reforms, and it will serve as a north star as we continue to build solutions that prioritize civil rights, safety, and understanding for all.
3. I was proud to testify before the Congressional Committee of Natural Resources in favor of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park. This site in Plains, Georgia contains President Jimmy Carter’s childhood home and farm as well as a free museum about his life and legacy. I thank my colleagues, Representatives Haaland and Young, for allowing me to speak as a native Georgian about the need to preserve historic and educational sites like these, particularly in rural areas.
