In response to the growing national movement to address police brutality, I joined my Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and House Democrats colleagues in passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
This historic legislative package establishes meaningful police reform like a ban on chokeholds and a ban on no-knock warrants in drug cases. It also makes lynching a federal crime, creates a National Police Misconduct Registry and a national use-of-force standard, limits the transfer of military-grade equipment to local law enforcement, and ends qualified immunity as we know it.
Recently, Congresswoman Karen Bass, Chair of the CBC, joined me for a special telephone town hall on the Justice in Policing Act. We heard from constituents about their overwhelming support for these reforms. But it's important to remember this package is just another step toward protecting our Black and Brown communities. We still need the Senate to pass these reforms immediately as our country continues to amplify this critical conversation about systemic racism in our justice system.
