Friend, it’s Phil. We had a win for workers recently. I wanted to tell you about it because it shows what this campaign is all about: listening, fighting, and delivering for every Coloradan.
➡️ Here’s what happened: A staffing agency in Colorado was misclassifying employees as independent contractors. That means their workers — and there were over 69,000 of them in the Denver area alone — were illegally deprived of their rights and legal protections. In this case, one of the worst problems was the agency skipping out on paying required unemployment insurance premiums, one of our most critical safety nets for when people are out of work. It’s hard enough to lose your job. If companies don’t pay into unemployment insurance like they’re supposed to, it slashes holes in the safety net that helps keep families afloat while job hunting. And for Coloradans struggling to get by, that just makes things even harder to deal with. This wasn’t right. So when we found out about it, we sprang into action. ➡️ Here’s how we remedied it: We took the staffing agency to court under 2022’s Colorado False Claims Act. And we held it accountable, forcing it to change its ways, treat workers properly, and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in settlement funds. Look, as your governor, you can always count on me to stand up for you if anyone tries to mistreat you on the job. When I’m governor, we’ll support workers, bolster our economy, invest in our workforce, and address the affordability crisis. That means enforcing laws that ensure companies play by the rules, just like workers have to do.
