Hello Tempe!
I'm Bobby Nichols, I am running for Tempe city council to make my hometown affordable for everyone, and I am excited to share a few campaign updates with you!
Bobby's First Forum!
On Tuesday, 12/2/25, I attended my first candidate forum, hosted by the University Lakes Neighborhood Association! Topics ranged from housing density to flood irrigation to the use of our public parks.
I had a great time, and I think it went well! I particularly enjoyed speaking about my bipartisan work with state legislators to protect victims of domestic violence and defend mutual aid in public spaces.
If you missed this one, don't worry! There is another candidate forum at the Tempe history museum on December 18th from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Register at the link below to secure your seat today!
On Monday, 12/1/2025, a young woman and young man were shot and killed by the young woman's husband outside of a restaurant in South Tempe.
Out of respect for the victims and their families, I will not share any of the names of those involved, but I will share my thoughts on what I have learned from news coverage and community members.
First, my heart is broken for the victims, their families, and their communities. When she suddenly and unexpectedly passed away this past January, my youngest sister was the same age as the young woman killed on Monday. So I know the shock and pain of losing a dearly loved friend and family member so young, and I know that nothing I can say will make that grief go away. If anyone impacted by this loss is reading these words, please know that you are not alone. If you or anyone else needs help connecting to mental health and wellness resources in this dark time, please do not hesitate to reach out.
According to news coverage, the friends, families, and coworkers of the victims expressed having feared for their safety around the man that took their lives, who is said to have often waited outside their restaurant when his wife was working, which reveals a pattern of domestic abuse and unequal social control.
I am a firm believer in common sense gun control, but even more than that, I am a passionate supporter of social programs that protect survivors of domestic violence and their communities by opening avenues of escape and both identifying and treating mental illness. I have written and passed bipartisan legislation expanding protective orders and emergency protective orders to survivors of domestic violence and their minor children in Arizona. I currently work as an assistant attorney general representing our state's department of child safety and adult protective services section in Superior and Administrative court when minor children and vulnerable adults are abused, exploited, or neglected. Every single day, I see the enormous benefit that accessible and consistent mental health services, housing services, protective services, and community building services have in volatile and dangerous domestic situations. Unfortunately, these services are limited in America, and their expansion is rarely if ever prioritized by lawmakers who have gutted so many of our social programs.
It is hard to escape domestic abuse, and our limited social services make breaking away even more difficult for abused partners, particularly abused women and those who do not confirm to America's gender binary. Wage gaps make it more difficult for these individuals to provide for themselves, especially if their partner has prevented them from finding work in the past. Our lack of consistent investment in emergency shelters and public housing means that abused partners face a very real threat of homelessness when attempting to flee dangerous relationships. America's failure to build programs that develop community accountability, provide public mental healthcare services, and create social safety nets hurts everyone, particularly those facing domestic abuse.
In order to build a world that is safe for everyone, we need to proactively solve the social determinants of crime by building public programs that address untreated mental illness, that build accountable communities, that end unsheltered homelessness, and that empower women to build dignified lives free from misogyny and gender bias in the workplace, the housing market, the home, and everywhere else. Building and perfecting these programs will take time, which is all the more reason to start today.
If you or a loved one is experiencing domestic abuse, please contact 480.350.8004 to speak with the city of Tempe's 24 hour Crisis team. If you are in need of a domestic violence shelter, please call the Maricopa County Centralized hotline at 480-890-3039 or 1-844-SAFEDVS. More information and resources are available through the Tempe Community Action Agency at THIS LINK.
I am committed to expanding services and protections for survivors of domestic violence, and I am always willing to search for resources. If you have questions that are not answered through the resources provided above, please use the links on my website, www.Bobby4Tempe.com, to contact me and my team.
Finally, Fundraising
Thanks to over 150 individual donors, we have raised over $13,000 for an affordable Tempe! That is an incredible number, especially since we don't accept any money from corporate lobbyists, land use attorneys, or monopoly utilities. Because of you, we have been able to build a powerful grassroots campaign in Tempe!
Now, the campaign is entering a new phase, and the success of our campaign depends on supporters like you. Canvassers cost $20 per hour, street signs cost $20 each, and we need both to win this race. To stay competitive, we need to raise about $2000 every week between now and the day that ballots drop.
We have the momentum, we have the support, we have the progressive platform that Tempe residents want. Now we just need your financial support to cross the finish line and bring home a win.
Your $20 donation buys one hour of professional canvassing or one street sign. $100 will buy five hours of professional canvassing or five street signs. A maximum donation of $650 will buy 32.5 hours of professional canvassing or 32 street signs (the printer won't sell me half a sign). Every dollar makes a huge difference.
Can you make a donation today to continue building our momentum?

One more thing!
Thank you for your continued support and encouragement! If you have made it this far and you are free this evening, please join me at a campaign celebration and fundraiser hosted by fellow challenger Elvis Taska for an evening of music, free food, speeches and fun!
Solidary and gratitude forever,
Bobby Nichols
