John,
As you read this, map manipulators who have thrown the country into a redistricting crisis are now setting their sights on South Carolina. They’re hoping to force through a gerrymandered map that would help Republicans gain an extra seat in Congress.
And the strategy they’re deploying is not subtle. They’re going after Rep. Jim Clyburn’s district — which is 46% Black — which could result in a map where voters of color have less of a say in who gets to represent their interests in Washington.
We must call this what it is: A blatant attempt to silence voters of color and sideline Black leaders in the halls of power.
All On The Line is preparing for fights like these in states across the country, which we expect to shift into high gear in the weeks ahead. You can ensure we’re prepared for each and every one of these fights by making a donation to fund our work in states like Florida, Indiana, New Hampshire, and wherever map manipulators go next. These cynical strategies have been used by map manipulators for years in an attempt to drown out the voices of voters of color.
In particular, politicians will try to “crack and pack” majority-minority districts: splitting Black and Brown communities among multiple districts, making it harder for these communities to select representatives of their choosing.
Take Missouri, for example — another state where map manipulators forced through a mid-decade gerrymander that carved up Kansas City into three separate districts. This new map used the same street, Troost Avenue, that was used to segregate white and Black communities during Jim Crow.
It’s not hyperbole to say that this gerrymandering fight is our generation’s test of whether we will stand up and defend civil rights in America. And that’s exactly what All On The Line is doing in states across the country, wherever anti-democracy politicians are trying to silence communities of color.
Will you join our generation’s fight for civil rights? Your donation will help us push back against attempts to rig maps that suppress the will of the people — no matter their race or their ZIP code. [[link removed]]
Thank you for stepping up in this watershed moment for our democracy.
