Michigan was built by entrepreneurial grit. And Detroit’s small businesses do it as well as anybody.
This Small Business Saturday, I spent the day walking the historic Avenue of Fashion in Detroit, visiting shops, greeting employees, and listening to the stories of people who make our local economy run.
Let me tell you what I saw: passion, creativity, hustle – and a whole lot of Michigan heart. From new pop-ups to neighborhood staples, the energy on Saturday was palpable.
One stop I especially loved: Mockery Zero Proof [ [link removed] ], Detroit’s first non-alcoholic bottle shop, now coming up on its first anniversary. It’s a woman-owned, Black-owned business that perfectly embodies the spirit of innovation and resilience that defines our state. (When you’re done reading this, click the link above to check out their website!)
The women at Mockery aren’t just selling non-alcoholic drinks – they’re building community, reimagining retail, and creating space for joy and connection.
I love seeing places like Mockery thrive, because I know what it takes to build something from scratch. My parents owned a small landscaping company, and let me tell you – it took serious Michigan grit.
My dad was often climbing into a truck to plow snow at 4 a.m while my mom would spend the day helping customers, and they both might be handling paperwork at night. They worked hard. They built something. And they taught me what perseverance, community, and rolling up your sleeves looks like.
I thought about them as I walked the Avenue on Saturday. I thought about how critical small businesses are to Michigan – how Mockery’s success is Detroit’s success, and Detroit’s success is all of ours.
That’s why, in Congress, I’m fighting to increase access to capital for minority-owned businesses, boost federal support for local entrepreneurs, ensure pop-ups can grow into permanent storefronts, and use federal money to help businesses get off the ground.
Small businesses create jobs, build wealth, and turn neighborhoods into destinations. They deserve more than just one Saturday of support – they deserve smart policies that help them grow, year-round.
To every small business owner out there: Thank you. Your work matters. Your voices are heard. Your dreams are worth fighting for.
Let’s keep showing up for each other. Let’s keep building. Together.
More soon,
💙 Haley
A personal note from Haley 👋
I’m a lifelong Michigander and the daughter of small-business owners. I’ve spent my career fighting for Michigan’s working families – and now I’m running for the U.S. Senate to keep standing up for the people I love.
But here’s the truth: Senate control could come down to Michigan. And Trump and his megadonors know it. That’s why they’re gearing up to spend tens of millions to defeat me and hand this seat to a MAGA Republican.
I need your help to fight back. This race will be one of the most competitive – and expensive – in the country, and I’m counting on grassroots support to win.
If you’re with me, will you chip in today?
Paid for by Haley Stevens for Senate.
