Sign the petition: Demand the release of millions of contraceptives currently being blocked from distribution by the Trump administration!
Dear MoveOn member,
Five million contraceptives—intrauterine devices (IUDs), birth control pills, and more—meant as aid to women and families globally are being blocked by the Trump administration.
That's right. Instead of distributing $9.7 million worth of contraceptives, the Trump administration wants to use taxpayer dollars to destroy them. But because it’s illegal in Belgium—where the contraceptives are currently being stored—to destroy usable medical supplies, the Trump administration is instead waiting out the clock, hoping to render the contraceptives unusable.1
It is a disgusting and cruel abuse of power to actively deny people the tools and resources they need to plan their families and future. Will you sign the petition?
Global aid workers have been sounding the alarm since the Trump administration essentially dissolved the United States Agency for International Development earlier this summer and plans to burn the contraceptives were discovered.2 They’ve made it clear that preventing women and families across the world from accessing birth control could lead to an increase in maternal death, unsafe abortions, and lifelong consequences from unplanned pregnancies.3
But the Trump administration doesn’t care, because the cruelty and subjugation is the point. It is widely known that empowering people with the information, tools, and resources they need to decide if and when to have children—and to be able to space out births—is good for maternal health, economic stability, and gender equity.4
Instead, Trump wants to punish women and destroy reproductive health care for all—not just in the U.S., but globally.
The Trump administration is facing pressure internationally to release the contraceptives to a nonprofit organization or foreign government to distribute. Add your name to the petition to make it clear that everyday Americans oppose destroying critical birth control!
The Trump administration's justifications for wanting to destroy the contraceptives are even more disturbing, and they forewarn what's to come. The State Department claimed the birth control products were "abortifacients"—medication that would terminate a pregnancy.5
"President Trump is committed to protecting the lives of unborn children all around the world. The administration will no longer supply abortifacient birth control under the guise of foreign aid," said a USAID spokeswoman in a statement to the The New York Times.6
While access to abortion is an important part of family planning and medication abortion is a safe and effective way to terminate a pregnancy, no methods of abortion were among the stockpile of birth control being sent as aid.7 The Trump administration wants to redefine everyday birth control methods—like the IUD and the pill—as "abortifacients" to further limit and control its distribution.
The Trump administration hopes it can slowly chip away at access to birth control by redefining it and limiting its distribution without the public noticing. We have to make it clear that we are watching—and we’re going to keep fighting for reproductive freedom.
We have to stop the Trump administration from abusing its power to limit people’s ability to plan if and when to have children, in the U.S. and globally. Will you sign the petition and then share with three friends to expose and push back against the Trump administration blocking birth control distribution?
Thanks for all you do.
