Hi,

I’m Cory Booker, U.S. Senator from New Jersey. I want to take a moment to talk about why I support Mike Espy in his race to become Mississippi’s next senator, and why I think you should too.

Mike is a trailblazer and lifelong public servant who made history when he became the first Black U.S. congressman from Mississippi since the Reconstruction era, as well as the first and only Black U.S. secretary of agriculture in our nation’s history. Now, he’s working to make history again by becoming Mississippi’s first Black U.S. senator since Reconstruction.

It can be shocking to realize that in the year 2020, only 10 African-Americans have served in the Senate in our country’s history – I myself was New Jersey’s very first Black senator when I was elected in 2013. And Mississippi, which has the highest percentage Black population of any state, has gone more than 100 years without Black leadership in the halls of the U.S. Senate.

In this very special and important moment right now, across our country people — especially young people of color — are demanding change. Just look at the nationwide calls for criminal justice reform, and the amazing victory Mississippians saw last month when they finally removed the hateful and divisive confederate battle emblem from their state flag.

Mississippi, like our country as a whole, is changing. And we need new leaders in the U.S. Senate who are ready and willing to change along with it for the better.

I know Mike will be a fighter in the U.S. Senate for affordable health care, public education, economic opportunity, and justice for each and every one of us if he wins this November. And by refusing any Super PAC money, he’s counting on grassroots contributions from folks like you to do it.

Help make history and flip the U.S. Senate this November: Chip in $10 or whatever you can to support Mike Espy’s people-powered campaign today.
