Democrat,
Access to quality and affordable healthcare is a top issue for millions of Americans year after year. That’s why when Democrats are in power, our leaders work tirelessly to bring down costs and expand access. We delivered the Affordable Care Act. We delivered negotiated drug prices. We capped the out-of-pockets costs for seniors.
Now Donald Trump and his MAGA loyalists are using their power to rip healthcare away from New Jersey families and jack up prices amidst a troubling economic situation Trump himself caused. Earlier this year, they passed a budget decimating Medicaid and refused to extend ACA premium tax credits.
Those tax credits are set to expire at the end of year. On January 1st, 22 million Americans will see their monthly healthcare premiums increase by an average of 114% and more than 1.5 million Americans will lose healthcare entirely.
The answer is simple: pass legislation to extend the tax credit. But Republicans won’t lift a finger. Congressional Democrats are circulating a discharge petition to force a vote on extending ACA premium tax credits for three years. It’s a dereliction of power to not extend these credits. We must take back Congress next year and get our government back on track serving the people. And the path to winning the House runs straight through New Jersey. It’s time to get to work again.
In this week’s Chairman’s Corner, read more about the impact of Trump’s failing economy, news from the Sherrill transition, and voter resource information on the upcoming special election for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District.
I also want to congratulate Hoboken Mayor-elect Emily Jabbour and Jersey City Mayor-elect James Solomon on their victories this week. Both are leaders who have served their communities on their respective city councils and have a deep understanding of the issues their constituents face. They are laser focused on the issue of affordability, a top concern for New Jerseyans everywhere, and I know they will both work tirelessly to move our cities forward in the new year.
— Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr.
THE SHERRILL TRANSITION
This week, Governor-elect Sherrill made two big cabinet position announcements. Lt. Governor-elect Dale Caldwell will also serve as our Secretary of State and the Executive Director of her transition team Kellie Doucette will be New Jersey’s first ever Chief Operating Officer.
As Secretary of State, Caldwell will be focused on small businesses, tourism, and the integrity of future elections in New Jersey. As COO, Doucette will be focused on building an effective and functioning government focused on delivering for residents.
Bonus! The Governor-elect was on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week. Check out her interview where she talks about how she’ll stand up to Trump [[link removed]] and shares a wild story [[link removed]] on what happened when she had her second kid!
TRUMP’S FLOPPING ECONOMY
Affordability is an issue we all care about, whether it's in housing, food, or utility costs. Donald Trump ran for president promising to lower costs yet action on that has never materialized. He said he’d appoint an “affordability czar.” That never happened.
Now, Americans are facing higher healthcare costs, grocery prices, and electricity bills, and a record number of Americans are taking on credit card debt.
Trump’s response? Call the affordability crisis a “fake narrative” and “con job” manufactured by Democrats. No, Donald. Democrats just focused on fixing this problem while you claim it “doesn’t mean anything to anybody.”
While Trump and Republicans try their best to ignore the fact that their policies are dragging down the economy and killing American jobs, Democrats like Governor-elect Sherrill are fighting to lower your everyday costs.
