A Critical Flaw In Our Search for a Vaccine
==================================
Hundreds of trials are underway to develop treatments and vaccines to address the coronavirus pandemic. But a huge flaw in clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine and treatment must be both recognized and remedied : Women, along with transgender men; nonbinary and gender-nonconforming people; people of color; and pregnant and lactating people have historically been excluded and underrepresented in clinical trials. Each of these communities has unique conditions that must be understood and monitored when evaluating treatments' safety and effectiveness and whether or not such treatments can ultimately be deemed successful.

No measures to treat and prevent the coronavirus will be truly successful if they are not effective for large swaths of the population; a failure to provide a vaccine and treatment that works for these populations is a failure to protect the public's health more broadly.

To continue to ignore this gap in research and trials amidst the deadliest global pandemic in a century puts the globe's health and financial security in jeopardy and is a risk we cannot afford to take. Here is what the U.S. government and drug manufacturers should do ? <[link removed]>

The United States' Breach of Trust in Indian Country

Tribal communities have faced some of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks in the world. The Navajo Nation alone has seen higher infection rates than those in Wuhan, China, at the height of the pandemic. This crisis-and the underlying conditions that tribal communities face-are the result of centuries of colonial violence and neglect that continue to this day. Many tribes have also faced the brunt of the economic downturn as their lifeblood enterprises in gaming and hospitality are closed for business during the pandemic. At the root of all these vulnerabilities are the broken promises that the federal government made to tribes in the constitutional process of signing treaties to acquire their lands.

In a recent report <[link removed]>, CAP laid out immediate and long-term policies to address both the pressing coronavirus crisis and the structural inequities that have made Indian country more vulnerable to health crises. Tribes are telling the federal government exactly what they need; the onus is now on the government to listen. Read more ? <[link removed]>
