I just wanted to follow up to make sure you saw my last email – because right now we can push our campaigns for economic justice further than ever before.

The UK is pursuing a green transition built on increased devastation from mining in the global south, calling certain minerals "critical” for the green transition while reserving much of them for the likes of the military industry. But we know that to succeed, the green transition cannot be built on exploitation but must be fair for everyone.

Here in the UK, we have the power to make a difference by working to ensure our government does not lock in unequal mineral resource grabs through trade deals. We’ll be working with our powerful network of activists across the country to push for trade deals which don’t block global south countries from taking control of their mining sectors and protecting affected lands and communities. But we need your support to make it happen.

The UK is following Donald Trump into a global scramble for mineral resources from the global south – and it’s using trade deals to do it. It’s often claimed that countries like the UK must increase our supply of minerals like lithium, graphite and cobalt for green technology. Our research shows many of these minerals are destined not for the green transition, but for the likes of the military industry instead.

Just this week the government released its Critical Minerals Strategy, in which human rights and protections aren’t mentioned once. Instead it states that the UK’s lithium demand “will increase by 1,100%” without any considerations of reducing demand, limiting the environmental devastation caused by mining, or what the UK’s fair share of global resources might be. It says the UK will sign more critical mineral trade deals, but with no detail on how to make these fair and reciprocal for resource-rich countries.

This rush for ‘critical minerals’ risks increasing conflict, stripping communities of their land and deepening the human rights and environmental abuses that so often come with mining. Global Justice Now is demanding that the UK government takes a globally just approach to critical mineral mining.

We want our government to prioritise the most necessary minerals for the green transition, embed protections for people and planet across the supply chain, and clearly plan ways to reduce demand through a circular economy, not just increase supply. You can help us push for a green transition based on justice

For decades, communities around the world have been resisting the human rights abuses and environmental harm caused by UK mining companies. Already, our government has sought deals with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Indonesia, among others, to secure access to their critical minerals reserves, but without addressing the damage that UK mining companies have already caused in these countries. And it is preparing to launch a new 10-year strategy to seek new deals.

We are working to ensure the UK does not lock in unequal mineral resource grabs through trade deals. We’ll be pushing for trade deals which allow countries to develop their industries locally, share green technologies, enshrine the right of local communities to say “no”, and drop Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) clauses – so foreign investors can’t sue countries which try to take control of their mining sectors or protect affected lands and communities.
