Herbert, right now, we’re facing one of the most alarming reports I’ve ever seen. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth may have authorized a military strike on survivors of a shipwreck — a violation of U.S. and international law and a potential war crime. This is a direct attack on the laws that govern our military, protect human life, and uphold America’s moral standing in the world. That’s why today I want to make something very clear: Pete Hegseth should resign immediately. Here’s the truth, Herbert: Hegseth should never have been in this position. He has a checkered past and lacks basic qualifications. As Defense Secretary, he’s leaked top-secret war plans – putting Americans at risk. He’s cracked down on basic transparency at the Pentagon. And now, this latest incident proves just how dangerous it is to have him remain in this sensitive position. This is a time when we need a Senate that stands up to Trump and his cronies more than ever. We need leaders who will stand up to pressure, reject political intimidation, and insist on the truth — even when Donald Trump and his allies threaten critics with arrest or worse. I’ve always done that as Congressman, and that’s why I’m running for Senate: because Illinois needs a Senator with a backbone and a proven track record of standing up to Trump and his allies.
