FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Skagit County Solid Waste Rates to Increase January 1, 2026
The Skagit County Solid Waste rates at each transfer station will increase starting January 1, 2026. Skagit County conducted a rate study in 2024 to ensure rates stay solvent as costs for long-haul transport and other operational needs continue to rise.
The Solid Waste division is funded entirely by disposal and user fees, and is not supported by tax revenue, which means fees must be sufficient to cover all costs of the division. The rate study recommended rates rise yearly for five years to accommodate the increased costs for the division. Tonnage rates are scheduled to increase by 2-3% annually until 2030, and the minimum charge at the Sauk and Ovenell Transfer Stations will increase by $1 each year to reach $30 in 2028.
The rate changes starting January 1, 2026 include:
- General solid waste at Skagit County Transfer and Recycling Station and the Sauk Transfer Station will now be $141 per ton.
- The minimum charge for general solid waste will be $28 for the first 380 pounds.
- At the Clear Lake Compactor Site, a 32 gallon can of garbage will remain at $9.
- Appliances will remain at $13 per item, and those containing freon will be $34.
Recycling and household hazardous waste drop-off will remain free for households.
