Cory Booker on What It Takes to Believe in America Again
“If America hasn’t broken your heart, you don’t love her enough,” the New Jersey senator argues.

John,
I know that so many of us feel heartbroken about our country.
But I am telling you right now: If America hasn’t broken your heart, you don’t love her enough.
We need to redeem the dream of America. The dream that was once real. The dream that offered relief from hardship.
The dream that offered my grandfather, who worked on an assembly line, not only enough money to provide for his family, but to become entrepreneurs and invest in local businesses. They were the Jeffersons. They moved on up.
That’s the dream for every generation. It’s the dream that’s fading.
And at the same time, we are facing incredible heartbreak as a nation. But we cannot give up.
Civil rights advocates didn’t give up after four girls died in a bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. LGBTQ+ activists didn’t give up at Stonewall when they were beaten down. John Lewis didn’t give up after he was brutally beaten back at the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
There’s nothing we’re experiencing now that our ancestors didn’t experience worse. They fought through it, and they brought about a new day.
So hold tight. The best chapter is upon us, if — and only if — we can get the leadership right.
Together, we can build a most just, loving nation. That starts by electing more Democrats to the Senate. If you’re standing with me in this fight, will you chip in today?
