John,

The New York Times just made very clear what’s at stake when the Supreme Court rules on Louisiana v. Callais . And it’s not just the congressional map in Louisiana.

“Over the longer run, the fate of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which protects majority-minority districts, becomes a key variable. If the Supreme Court strikes it down, Republicans could easily redraw up to a dozen districts across the South. ”

I can’t overstate the urgency of this moment, John. If the Supreme Court strikes down Louisiana’s Voting Rights Act-compliant congressional map, it would encourage anti-democracy extremists to attack districts across the country that keep communities of color intact — potentially denying Black voters their rightful representation at the ballot box on a massive scale.

So while we’re hoping for the best — that the Supreme Court preserves Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and permanently restores a fair congressional map in Louisiana — we’re preparing for the worst.

As we wait for the Court’s ruling, the NDRC is committed to the fight for a truly representative democracy where every voter can make their voice heard. But we need your continued support to ensure we’re ready to fight back to stop power grabs across the country.
