SIGN NOW: We’re building bipartisan momentum to BAN members of Congress from getting rich trading stocks. It’s just common sense – can you add your name to push it over the finish line? >>
John, trust in government is at an all-time low right now. [1]
And it’s no mystery why: too many lawmakers treat public office like a personal get-rich-quick scheme, consistently making “perfectly timed” stock trades that beat the market.
Ordinary Americans don’t get those odds. Members of Congress do – because they have access to sensitive, nonpublic information about industries they oversee.
Our economy is supposed to be a level playing field. Everyone follows the same rules and has the same information – that's why insider trading is a serious crime.
But when members of Congress quietly trade stocks in specific companies – then turn around to cast votes impacting the share price of those same companies – norms about a level playing field collapse. And public trust collapses with them.
Banning congressional stock trading is a simple idea. Overwhelming majorities of Americans – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents – are on board. [2] That’s why a bipartisan coalition is finally moving the Restore Trust in Congress Act to comprehensively ban congressional stock trading.
Your voice can help seal the deal. Tell Congress you demand an end to lawmakers profiting from insider information >>
Congress has passed piecemeal reforms like the STOCK Act to put a band-aid on the problem – but the penalties are laughable and enforcement abysmal. [3] We send our representatives to Washington, D.C. to fight for all of us, not their own bank accounts.
We shouldn’t accept a system where politicians can profit from the problems they’re supposed to solve. That’s why Common Cause is sounding the alarm and demanding Congress pass a full ban on stock trading by lawmakers.
This is a rare instance of serious bipartisan agreement, with over 100 co-sponsors – including dozens of Republicans. In fact, some Republicans are leading the charge to force a vote on the bill – but we need leaders from both parties to stop dragging their feet. [4]
So, if you want to make sure this bill doesn’t get watered down with last-minute loopholes or killed altogether, your voice is absolutely critical right now.
Sign the Petition: Demand Congress pass the Restore Trust in Congress Act and work for We the People – not their own bottom lines.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
