Friend —
Experts say the first people to inhabit North America came here over 20,000 years ago. The first European immigrants here in Massachusetts landed in 1620.
And over the 400 years since that landing, people of all walks of life, all religions and ethnicities, from every country and corner of the globe, have come to America, found their home, and helped form the nation we know today.
There’s a reason the inscription of the Statue of Liberty reads: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,”
There is no America without immigrants. There is no liberty in a land that violently turns away those seeking refuge, especially at a time when the wealthy and powerful have so much.
That idea is central to my approach to representing Massachusetts in the Senate. But the way the Trump administration has carried out its immigration agenda is a complete mockery of this history and these values.
They have torn apart families and terrorized neighborhoods for no reason other than to intimidate.
They have run roughshod of the Constitution and violated civil rights of immigrant communities left and right.
They have arrested and indefinitely detained college kids here on visas, green card holders with all of their papers, legal residents who appear for their court dates, and many US citizens, too.
They have even sent hundreds of people to a notorious super-prison in El Salvador without a charge or court hearing.
And now, Trump is putting a target on Somali-Americans with vile, racist smears that are meant to create consent for more ICE crackdowns and far-right harassment campaigns.
It’s unacceptable. It’s authoritarian. It’s cruel. And it’s against everything America stands for — everything that I know Americans stand for — despite our shortcomings in delivering on the promise of equality.
Our job now is to organize, fight back, blunt the damage of this dangerous agenda, and do everything we can to build a nationwide movement to defeat Trump and his extremist anit-immigrant coalition in Congress and the courts.
If you are ready to stand up for immigrants, make a contribution to my campaign. Massachusetts can and must lead the way with a humane, just, and common sense immigration system that treats everyone with the dignity they deserve. Chip in to power our work and we fight back.
