Dear Friends and Partners on This Journey,
This Shabbos we will read in the weekly parsha
:"וַיִּוָּתֵר יַעֲקֹב לְבַדּוֹ, וַיֵּאָבֵק אִישׁ עִמּוֹ עַד עֲלוֹת הַשָּׁחַר".
“And Yaakov was left alone and a man wrestled with him until the dawn”
Chazal teach us that Yaakov Avinu went back to retrieve the pachim ketanim, the small vessels he had left behind, and it was at that very moment that the malach came to struggle with him. Yaakov’s care for the seemingly small details reflects a deep, foundational belief that every aspect of the world carries meaning, and that our avodah/effort is to bring each detail to its proper tikkun and fulfillment. This is not mere technical perfection, but an expression of emunah — that nothing in avodas HaShem is insignificant.
And it is precisely at that point of consistency and spiritual integrity that resistance arises: the malach comes to fight, attempting to obstruct Yaakov’s emunah which extends to every part of reality. This struggle continues until today — “ad alos hashachar”— until the coming of Moshiach, bimheira b’yameinu.
This is our path as well.
The foremost mission of Eretz HaKodesh is to safeguard the values of Torah and the sanctity of Eretz Yisrael. For this reason, individual achievements — positions, budgets, or official responsibilities — meaningful as they may be, are not the core of what we seek. Our primary task is to ensure that activity within the Israel national institutions faithfully reflects Torah values, and that the voice of Torah influences the direction and the priorities of these institutions.
While we appreciate every sincere effort for the sake of Heaven, we can not lose sight of our first responsibility: to see the larger picture — a picture that, by definition, contains within it many details. We must look at who is shaping the leadership of the national institutions, what goals they seek to advance, and what the true long-term impact will be on the values represented there. We carry responsibility for every area in which we are involved. Therefore, we will not declare the negotiations within the national institutions concluded until we can stand behind our decision with complete clarity and integrity.
As loyal partners, we assure you: the moment the negotiations are finalized, and once we can confirm that the values and principles we set forth have been upheld, we will share with you the full picture of developments and accomplishments across all the national institutions.
And on an important note —
We are pleased to inform you that after an extended process of legal proceedings before the AZM American Zionist Movement Tribunal, the panel of judges accepted our position in full, establishing personal and legal responsibility on the part of the leaders of the Conservative movement for actions taken to harm us and our supporters. They were ordered to issue a formal public condemnation of these actions and to compensate us for the financial damage incurred. Though the actual harm caused far exceeds the awarded compensation, the Tribunal’s unequivocal statement — that such divisive and damaging conduct is unacceptable — is a significant achievement that strengthens our standing and validates the righteousness of our cause.
Wishing you a wonderful and meaningful Shabbos Kodesh,
Rabbi Pesach Lerner
