*Maine Forest Service Marks the Passing of former State Forester John Cashwell*

Maine Forest Service notes with great sadness the passing of former State Forester and long-time forestry advocate, John H. Cashwell of Bangor.

John Cashwell was appointed Director (State Forester) of the Maine Forest Service in 1987 by Conservation Department Commissioner Robert R. LaBonta. John was previously a pilot and head of Georgia-Pacific Company’s Flight Department. He was a Maine Licensed Forester and a Christmas Tree Grower. John received a B.S. Degree in Forest Management from the University of Montana.

During his tenure at MFS John was instrumental in bringing attention to Maine and New England’s forest health conditions, and in advancing a strong working relationship with the USDA Forest Service’s State and Private Forestry program. Dave Struble, former State Entomologist at MFS, remembers John as "A wonderful boss and companion. The quickest intellect of anyone I ever knew or worked with, bar none."

John left the department in October 1992 to become president of the Seven Islands Land Company. He was a lifelong champion of good forestry, serving in multiple professional and volunteer capacities for the forest industry throughout many decades, promoting the long-term stewardship of Maine’s forests. He also worked in multiple roles in local government and other entities, particularly serving the people of the City of Bangor.

Maine Forest Service extends its condolences to John’s family, along with our sincere appreciation of his many years of support and service to MFS and the entire forest community. We will miss him; and will miss his humor, knowledge, and his straightforward candor.
