Dear Friend,
I am sure you know from media coverage that the last month has been tough. I may be the only Green MP, but I do not carry the load alone. We are a Green team.
The analysis of the November 4 budget was a group effort. We have a leadership team with former Green MP Mike Morrice one of two deputy leaders, with First Nations leader Rainbow Eyes, an Indigenous land defender, working as the second deputy leader. We rely on the Green Shadow Cabinet. All of us are volunteers. Our work is supported by a very small staff team.
We are, as ever, punching way above our weight. To gain Greens' vote on the budget, the Prime Minister made commitments to me. Shockingly, they were reversed within days to get a deal with Alberta. All this political intrigue led directly to the high profile resignation of the former environment minister Steven Guilbeault.
With all those critical events pulling me in multiple directions, why am I writing you now to launch our ambitious December fundraising campaign? Surely begging for money can wait? I wish it could.
Although a December election was narrowly averted, the very close vote makes us aware that this minority government is not very stable. It rests on a knife-edge. We are undoubtedly going to be in multiple by-elections by spring 2026. We could be in a national election any time.
That is why we have set our December target at one million dollars.
A lot, I know. But in 2024, in the month of December alone, we raised $719,000. And that was at a time when we were not in the news very much at all. We were polling lower than we are today, and still our loyal and dedicated members gave so very generously.
We will be ready for an exciting leadership race, when I can pass the torch to new leadership while continuing to serve as a Green MP. Let us start 2026 debt-free and ready to take on elections and by-elections whenever and wherever they come.
We will elect more Green MPs.
Since April 2025, we have chopped down a one-million-dollar debt to less than $400K. Now it's time to be rid of it for good. I know it is asking a lot, but now is the critical moment. We must ensure the new government does not ignore the growing gap between the rich and the poor, stops the rapid militarization of our society, and honours Canada's historic role in peace-making and protecting human rights. We need a government that stops throwing fuel on the fire of global warming, faces the fact that Canada must end our rip-and-ship economy and instead ensure jobs for Canadians by processing our own resources sustainably and locally.
We can do this, and we can do it together.
