“Cultivating Hope in Indigenous Mental Health Media Coverage”
4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, December 9
Facebook + YouTube Live, @afspnational
Suicide prevention is about cultivating hope, and this is especially important for media accounts of suicide prevention in Indigenous communities. Hope comes from noting that suicide rates in Indigenous communities decreased 15% from 2021–2023, though still the highest for any ethnic or racial group in the U.S. Let’s discuss how media coverage on Indigenous communities can shift the narrative from focusing narrowly on pain and tragedy, to building resilience and community approaches for suicide prevention.
Join journalists and suicide prevention experts as they discuss how media, research, and community voices can better serve Indigenous communities by deepening their understanding of the challenges faced, elevating culturally centered solutions, and highlighting stories of strength, healing, and hope.
Moderated by AFSP Vice President of Public Relations María de los Ángeles Corral, the December 9th panel discussion will feature:
- Jourdan Bennett-Begaye –– Managing Editor, ICT (formerly Indian Country Today) Board of Director Indigenous Journalists Association, Jourdan Bennett-Begaye
- Brandon Kapelow –– Director, Photographer, Writer, and AFSP Volunteer
- Jill Harkavy-Friedman, PhD –– AFSP Senior Vice President of Research
We hope you join us for this important event!
