IT'S BEEN A ROUGH SUMMER…

This week, the federal government carried out its first executions in 17 years. Per usual, the cases were fraught with issues – victims' family members who were stringently opposed, overt mental health diagnoses, and a claim of innocence.

Present in both executions carried out thus far were further problems with government transparency. Each of the executions were carried out illegally in the middle of the night, long after the warrants for executions had expired at midnight. One of the condemned was strapped to the gurney for four hours on end, and media members fought to gain access and insight to the inner workings of the system.

Two more executions are scheduled for this summer - one just a few hours from now. The federal government is one of the only institutions carrying out executions at this time, with the majority of states halting these procedures due to COVID-19 concerns and ongoing budget crises.

WYOMING GOVERNOR HINTS AT MORATORIUM...

This week, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon indicated he was considering a moratorium on the death penalty during a Zoom meeting of lawmakers. The state is facing a looming budget crisis and is considering multiple spending cuts to prepare. We applaud him for this common-sense suggestion and expect to see other states consider the same.
