CBS 2 Two arrested following protest at Koreatown synagogue Tensions flared at a synagogue Wednesday morning after protesters disrupted a private event at the place of worship in Koreatown. Wilshire Boulevard Temple’s Senior Rabbi Joel Nickerson says their temple was hosting a public safety event with Jewish and Korean leaders when the protesters disrupted the event around 10 a.m. Rabbi Nickerson says the protesters used hateful language and broke a glass vase while inside. He added that their temple’s private security stepped in, and LAPD arrived shortly after, detaining at least two people. "We had people demonstrating with horrific anti-Semitic slurs, sneaking into the event with the desire purely just to disrupt this event," said Nickerson. Video shared with NBC4 shows multiple protesters inside the building, disrupting the ongoing event. The protesters eventually moved outside, where Rabbi Nickerson says they stayed for several hours in front of their temple, blocking the entrance and harassing people trying to enter their synagogue. "This is something that is striking even more fear in Los Angeles for the Jewish community, something that we don't need," said Nickerson. "We've had enough fear for the last couple of years, and this is a time for all of us to come together. We will not be intimidated by this." They eventually shattered her kitchen window and were able to enter. The burglary was captured on the victim’s cat camera as two men rifled through her bedroom, eventually discovering a box that contained one-of-a-kind rings belonging to her late mother. “My mom passed away last October after about a 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s,” the victim told KTLA’s Mary Beth McDade. “We sold everything she owned for her care. The only things I didn’t sell were her rings because I knew how much they meant to her.” The woman, who did not wish to be identified out of safety concerns, said the suspects “actually took the pillowcase off my pillow and used that to take everything out of my jewelry box.” KTLA 5 Banker to Plead Guilty in LA to $2.7M COVID-19 Benefits Fraud Scheme A former Wells Fargo banker is expected to plead guilty Thursday in downtown Los Angeles to a federal charge alleging he fraudulently obtained nearly $2.7 million in COVID-19 relief funds and small business loans partly by using the stolen identities of developmentally disabled persons who lived in long-term care facilities. Norayr Madadi, 40, of Burbank, has agreed to enter a plea to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, which carries a possible sentence of up to 20 years behind bars, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. According to the indictment, Madadi was a banker at Wells Fargo and allegedly opened fraudulent accounts in the names of shell companies and persons using stolen and phony identities. MyNewsLA California police warn of new trend among criminals stealing cars The Anaheim Police Department is warning the public of a new trend being used by criminals to steal cars. Within the past two weeks, police investigators have come across thieves using sophisticated equipment and computer smarts to steal cars. Both incidents happened in Anaheim Hills. Police say in one of the incidents, thieves smashed into the car, then plugged a tablet into the car's computer system, re-programmed the car, then drove away. The other theft happened while the car's key fob was inside a home. "They're using some sort of antenna to pick up the signal from your key fob that's inside your house. They're taking that signal, relaying it over to somebody at your car that unlocks the door, they get in, they push start, and off they go," said Sgt. Matt Sutter with the Anahiem Police Department. Police say one of the best ways to keep your car safe is to park in a garage. But if you have to park on the street, make sure you are under a streetlight. FOX 11 3 Nebraska officers wounded, suspect killed in shooting Three Omaha police offers were wounded and a suspect in an earlier shooting was killed Wednesday in an exchange of gunfire at a gas station. Officers obtained a license plate number from the scene and followed the suspect’s car to the gas station, he said. The officers watched the suspect get out and enter a restroom. After additional officers arrived, they ordered the man out of the restroom and he came out firing, police said in a news release. One officer was struck before the suspect retreated back into the restroom. A bystander who was in the restroom when the shooting began managed to come out safely before officers again ordered the suspect out and a second shootout occurred. That time a second officer was shot and a third was hit by shrapnel. The officers returned fire, and the suspect was killed. PoliceOne FBI arrests suspect accused of placing D.C. pipe bombs on Jan. 5, 2021 The FBI made an arrest on Thursday in its nearly 5-year-old investigation into who placed pipe bombs in Washington on Jan. 5, 2021, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. In the years since, investigators have sought the public’s help in identifying a shadowy subject seen on surveillance camera even as they struggled to determine answers to basic questions, including the person’s gender and motive and whether the act had a clear connection to the riot at the Capitol a day later when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the building in a bid to halt the certification of the Republican’s 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.
