Enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies have been keeping healthcare more affordable for tens of millions of people. And with these subsidies, people living below the federal poverty line of $15,650 are able to access silver-level health insurance plans with $0 monthly premiums.

But these subsidies are about to go away unless Congress acts.

That’s why I’ve signed a discharge petition to try and force a vote in the House on a renewal of these ACA tax credits. 214 of my colleagues have signed, meaning we need only 4 more signatures to force Speaker Johnson to hold a vote.

With open enrollment ending December 15 for a January 1 health insurance start date (and January 15 for a February start date), the time for Congress to act is NOW.

In the Senate, a vote is expected next week. But no such promise exists in the House. We need just a handful of my Republican colleagues to join Democrats in forcing a vote.

If no vote is taken, these subsidies will expire on December 31st, and the out-of-pocket health insurance costs for tens of millions of people will more than double.

Already, people are seeing their costs increase during the current enrollment period, which is discouraging many Americans from signing up for health insurance. Because of Congress’ inaction on this, some insurance companies have pulled out of the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

Clearly, our for-profit healthcare system isn’t working. While I will continue fighting for Medicare for All to ensure healthcare as a human right, this vote is critical right now.

Twenty-four million people get their healthcare through the ACA exchange. Over 90% use these tax credits to keep healthcare more affordable. If these tax credits are allowed to expire, millions will have to make impossible decisions between keeping their health insurance and affording other necessities such as food and housing.

Millions will be forced to go without health insurance altogether.
