Dear John,
Today is Women's Equality Day, which commemorates the adoption of the 19th Amendment prohibiting state and federal governments from denying the right to vote on the basis of sex. The recognition of this day was spearheaded by Congresswoman Bella Abzug, one of the founders of the National Women's Political Caucus.
It would be decades later until women of color secured the right to vote, and while we have made many strides since, we have still not passed the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).
I urge my opponent, Rep. Jerry Nadler, to schedule a full hearing on H.J. Res. 38 to remove the ratification deadline from the Equal Rights Amendment and help move it to the House floor for a vote. We must get the ERA across the finish line.
With so much at risk and women's basic human rights constantly under attack, we cannot wait a minute more to pass the ERA and put permanent protection into the U.S. Constitution where it belongs.
All my best,
Lindsey
