INDIANAPOLIS — A new initiative from the office of Indiana Gov. Mike Braun would allow eligible state employees to bring their infants to work in the first six months of their lives.

According to a news release from Braun’s office, Braun announced the launch of the “Family First Workplace” policy on Tuesday, stating that the program will begin as a pilot in the following agencies:

Governor’s officeIndiana Department of HealthState Personnel Department

This comes after Braun signed an executive order in March [[link removed]] that strengthened parental leave for Indiana employees, including six weeks of paid childbirth recovery leave and up to eight weeks of leave for those who deliver a child via C-section.

In the release, Braun said that the new initiative “reflects Indiana’s commitment to strengthening families, supporting parents in the workforce and promoting healthy early childhood development.”

“Indiana is going to lead the nation in pro-family policy,” Braun said in the release. The parental bonding that happens in the first months of a child’s life are irreplaceable, and our new Family First Workplace pilot program helps parents stay connected to their newborns while continuing their careers. Indiana is building a culture that puts families first.”

The release said the pilot program is expected to begin immediately. If successful, officials said that the initiative may expand to additional agencies.
