I have no idea what percentage of the population uses an AI chatbot for companionship these days, but it’s certainly a greater number than I’d wish. I get the mental health benefit of having an emotional confidant or someone who will regularly affirm you. But no matter how many times an AI bot may tell you in a given day that it loves you, all it offers is a false sense of intimacy.

At the Christian Century, we care a lot about companionship. Not companionship with a false sense of intimacy but one built on honest spiritual and intellectual company. Every time our magazine lands in your mailbox or shows up on your screen, think of it as a steady conversation partner. Whether you want to celebrate or argue with a particular article or idea, that’s part of the relationship. Just know that we pledge to show up in your life faithfully and dependably.
