John,
It’s obvious to everyone: the Trump Administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has been an unmitigated disaster. Just look at the cases – for the first time ever we saw 75,000 new confirmed infections in a day, and there’s no sign it’s slowing down.
Back in March, the coronavirus was a natural disaster, but the fact that we have the worst outbreak in the world in July is a man made one, and Donald Trump is the man at the center of that failure.
It didn’t have to be this way. If the Administration had listened to scientists and public health experts, not sought to reopen too quickly, encouraged all Americans to wear masks, and put in place the testing and tracing program we needed, life in America right now could be getting back to something like normal. Instead, we’re staring down tens of thousands more deaths and needless suffering.
I wish I could say there’s evidence the Administration is changing course, but it doesn’t look that way. The Administration is already telling schools to re-open or they will be punished financially for listening to the advice of health experts. And this week, they tried to take the deeply concerning step of telling hospitals to report data to a new portal, bypassing the Center for Disease Control. The bottom line is that the White House seems more interested in pretending things are going well than doing anything to help or protect people’s health.
And in the most absurd turn of events of all, this administration has been trying to silence and discredit world-renowned infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci. Reports indicate the White House has sent news outlets opposition research in an attempt to attack Fauci, and Trump’s top trade advisor even wrote an op-ed this week claiming that Fauci has been “wrong about everything I have interacted with him on.” Why is the trade advisor even pretending to be a health expert?!
This is dangerous, John. Lives are literally on the line, as American deaths from coronavirus rise above 138,000. Trump, his administration, and his party are playing politics with our lives and attacking science.
It’s up to us to stand up against this Administration’s blatant attack on science, transparency, and Americans’ health.
