Hi John,

We just witnessed a grave injustice here in Sonoma County, California. Animal rescuer *Zoe Rosenberg was sentenced to 90 days in custody* and two years of probation for saving four suffering chickens from Perdue’s Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse. Zoe was ordered to turn herself in one week from today on December 10th, where she will serve the first 30 days of her sentence in the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility before becoming eligible for jail alternatives for the final 60 days of her sentence.

Jailing someone for saving neglected animals is already outrageous, but given Zoe’s medical vulnerabilities, this jail sentence is terrifying. Zoe has lived with Type 1 diabetes since childhood and she relies on an insulin pump, which the Sonoma County jail threatened to remove when she was first arrested. She also remains on a feeding tube due to gastroparesis, a serious complication that hospitalized her right before trial. It’s hard to overstate how frightening this is: *Zoe depends on medical equipment and care the jail has already threatened to take away.* Yet, despite these risks and despite her nearly two years of full compliance with pre-trial conditions, Judge Kenneth Gnoss chose to send Zoe to jail anyway.

*Before anything else,* *please share this news widely on your social media* ( [link removed] ) *.* The Sonoma County District Attorney wants to silence Zoe and protect Perdue's profits at all costs. When we speak out together, we expose the animal cruelty they’re trying so hard to hide and make it impossible for them to bury this injustice. Share our posts on Instagram ( [link removed] ) , Facebook ( [link removed] ) , X ( [link removed] ) and Bluesky ( [link removed] ). *Then sign the urgent petition we've just published at* *FreeZoe.org* ( [link removed] ) calling on California Governor Gavin Newsom to pardon Zoe and secure her release.

Nearly 200 people showed up today to support Zoe and the right to rescue. We completely filled the courtroom and overflowed into the halls. Zoe spoke bravely and honestly in court with the movement behind her. She spoke about the animals she has seen collapsed on the floor of Petaluma Poultry's factory farms and those who enter the slaughterhouse scalding tank while fully conscious. She did not apologize for rescuing Poppy, Aster, Ivy and Azalea. Instead, *she made the animals still suffering a promise to never stop fighting and she urged each of us to do the same.
*
Thank you for standing with Zoe and the animals, and for making sure the world knows what happened here today.

With determination,

Cassie
