Christianity Under Attack? U.S. Churches Burned Down, Statues of the Virgin Mary Defaced

By: Zachary Mettler

Over the past week, two Catholic churches were burned to the ground here at home in the United States and two statues of the Virgin Mary were defaced.

On Saturday, July 11, a man was arrested for setting fire to Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ocala, Florida. According to WKRG, Steven Shields, 23, on Saturday rammed his minivan through the front door of the church, poured gasoline all over the foyer, and then set it on fire.

During the attack, several people were inside the church preparing to celebrate mass. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

WKRG reported that Shields told detectives he smiled and laughed as he described the attack as “awesome.” He also told detectives that he was “on a mission,” and stated that he has problems with the Catholic Church.

Shields is being held without bail and was charged with attempted murder, arson, burglary and evading arrest.

New Coronavirus Study
New Coronavirus Study: One-Third of U.S. ‘Excess Deaths’ Resulted from Pandemic Response, Not the Virus
By: Bruce Hausknecht

When the coronavirus pandemic reached its peak in March and April in the United States, the response was drastic: surgeries and doctor visits were canceled, governors issued stay-at-home orders and people stayed away from emergency rooms in droves.

Doctors who spoke on the subject at the time worried that the public and medical response to the pandemic was itself going to be the cause of additional, non-COVID-related deaths. Emergency room visits decreased 42%, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). If people were afraid of seeking medical attention for critical needs such as heart attacks, for example, medical professionals wondered out loud if we would see a spike in deaths that could have been prevented.

Facebook Bans Content Related to Change from Homosexuality — Calls it ‘Hate Speech’

By: Jeff Johnston

Facebook announced that both Facebook and Instagram would be banning any content that promotes so-called “conversion therapy.” As reported by CNN Business, Facebook said it would be updating its “hate speech” policies “to include posts that advertise or promote the practice.”

“Conversion therapy” is a term adopted by opponents of change from homosexuality or transgenderism. It’s used by activists to describe any sort of help for individuals with unwanted same-sex attractions or gender confusion — including counseling, prayer and support groups offered by pastors, licensed counselors, churches and Christian ministries.

New York Times Editor, Bari Weiss, Resigns – Blasting Paper’s ‘New McCarthyism’ and Anti-Semitism
By: Zachary Mettler

Editor for The New York Times, Bari Weiss, resigned from her job at The Times on Tuesday and wrote a stinging rebuke of the paper’s hostile culture and groupthink in her resignation letter. Her letter included unprecedented revelations uncovering massive problems at the nation’s second most circulated newspaper.

Weiss, a centrist, cited The Times’ “new McCarthyism,” “constant bullying” from colleagues who disagreed with her views, remarks from coworkers calling her a “Nazi” and a “racist” and antisemitic comments about how she would be “writing about the Jews again” as reasons for her resignation.

Her resignation letter was addressed to Arthur Gregg Sulzberger, the current publisher at The New York Times.

A Vaccine for COVID-19? Scientists Hopeful After First Human Tests

By: Brittany Raymer

Scientists recently concluded an initial human test of a new COVID-19 vaccine, and the results were encouraging. As a result, the stock market got a little boost as investors were hopeful that an end to the lockdowns and restrictions may finally be in sight.

Conducted by biotech company Moderna with cooperation from the federal government, the preliminary study included 45 healthy adults between the ages of 18-55. To verify the efficacy of the treatment, the participants received varying doses of 25μg (low), 100μg (medium), and 250μg (high) of the drug known as mRNA-1273, 28 days apart.
