I’m turning 98 this month, so I figure I have another 15 or 20 years of
activism left in me! I hope you’ll be by my side.
I’ve seen plenty of ups and downs over my 98 years – in my own life and
the life of the country. But I don’t remember anything like this.
I’m not just talking about the coronavirus pandemic and systemic racism in
policing and elsewhere. I’m talking about an epic failure of leadership by
Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, William Barr, and Trump’s other enablers.
They’re making our problems worse and weakening our democracy.
They’ve shown that they’ll do anything to hold on to power – even blocking
Americans from their sacred right to vote. Which is why we have to use
every bit of our individual and collective power to fight back.
So, on my 98th birthday, I’m writing to ask that you step up to challenge

We’ve faced national crises before – I lived through the Great Depression
and I flew combat missions in World War II. But the danger presented by
Trump and the Radical Right movement he’s energized feels like something
entirely different.
That’s why I am so grateful for People For the American Way.
For almost 40 years, People For the American Way has defended our
constitutional rights and worked to build a country that makes the
“blessings of liberty” available to everyone. We want to make “We, the
people” mean “ALL the people.”
Trump and Trump Republicans are distorting and corrupting the American
Way. They’re abusing their power to plunder our country. It is breaking my
heart. And it is making me mad.
Thanks to you and so many others, People For the American Way has been
growing stronger. We are using every tool we have to fight for democracy
and the protection of voting rights, equality for LGBTQ Americans, the
freedom to worship as we want or not at all, and courts that protect every
American and not just the most powerful ones.
And now we’re energized by a new president, BEN JEALOUS, at the helm,
ready to lead us into what I hope will be PFAW’s most exciting chapter
yet.
