THE HEART OF THE WHITE HOUSE
"If the West Wing is the mind of the nation, then the East Wing is the heart.”
— First Lady Betty Ford
Built in 1902, the East Wing of the White House served as the public entrance to “The People’s House” for 123 years. For holiday parties, the entrance and colonnade would be decorated with Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands. A band would play carols just outside as the guests arrived.
In 1942, FDR commissioned an expansion of the East Wing, adding offices over an underground bunker installed for emergency operations during World War II. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt used the new offices as a base for her activism, holding press conferences for women journalists, hosting dignitaries, educators and civil rights advocates, welcoming groups ranging from the Girl Scouts to the Women’s Trade Union League, elevating the role of the First Lady in national and political life.
The East Wing served as the offices of all First Ladies ever since.
Until now.
