The New York State Legislature will be back in session this Monday, July 20. This is likely the last opportunity to pass LGBTQ-affirming laws this year—and it means we have a chance to push through two important bills that we have worked on together over the last several months. Here is how you can help:

1.

Ask Senate Leadership to Pass the Hate Crimes Analysis and Review Act

New York State currently has an alarming lack of transparency around hate crimes, including who the victims are as well as who is imprisoned for committing these offenses. Given the rising levels of hate crimes, and the continued over-criminalization of marginalized communities by the criminal justice system as a whole, a lack of data on hate crimes is a blind spot we cannot allow to continue.

Senate leadership has the ability to move this to the floor for a vote. Call them today by dialing 718.866.4208 and ask them to support the Hate Crimes Analysis and Review Act. You’ll get suggestions on what to say before you’re connected.

2.

Support the Repeal of the “Walking While Trans” Ban

This is a statute that law enforcement uses to target, harass, coerce into sexual acts and arrest cisgender and transgender women of color and gender-expansive people for how they dress, or for simply existing in public spaces. Please urge lawmakers to take action on Monday by sharing this message
