Woman sexually assaulted while walking her dog in downtown L.A.

A woman says she was violently assaulted by an unhoused individual while walking her dog in downtown Los Angeles earlier this month, an attack captured on surveillance video and now under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident happened early on the morning of Nov. 8 in front of a high-rise building across from the Los Angeles Convention Center, according to the victim, who asked to be identified only as “Terra” for her safety. “Before I knew it, he grabbed me and I was not able to get away,” she said to KTLA’s Lindsey Peña. The surveillance footage shows a man approaching Terra as she walked alone. She said the attacker pushed her against the glass of the building, grabbed her by the neck and groped her. “He grabbed the back of my neck, and my crotch area, and I was screaming for help,” she recalled. Terra described the man as extremely strong and silent, making only noises rather than speaking. She managed to break free, but the struggle continued.

DUI driver plows into L.A. ambulance transporting elderly patient, police say; 5 hospitalized

A suspected drunk driver slammed into an ambulance on Sunday night in the San Fernando Valley, officials say. Five people were injured including the 94-year-old man the ambulance was transporting, the 81-year-old woman accompanying him, the ambulance’s driver and another Los Angeles Fire Department staff member. They were all hospitalized “in fair condition with unknown injuries,” Fire Department spokesperson Jennifer Middleton said Sunday. The 34-year-old male driver of the SUV that hit the ambulance — the sole person in his vehicle — was taken to a trauma center and was in critical condition, Middleton said. The driver was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence after the crash, Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Drake Madison confirmed Monday. The LAFD ambulance was struck by the black SUV around 8 p.m. Sunday at Woodman Avenue and Chase Street in Arleta, according to Middleton. The car was severely damaged, according to online witnesses on TikTok. The cause of the collision is still under investigation as of Monday.

FBI investigating attempted firebombing at downtown LA federal building

FBI agents were investigating an apparent attempted firebombing at a federal building in Downtown Los Angeles, and its possible connection to an arson fire earlier in the day in Koreatown, several law enforcement sources told NBC4 Investigates. LA City firefighters were dispatched to the federal building at 300 N. Los Angeles St. at 8:36 a.m. Monday after someone dropped or threw a molotov-cocktail-type device near the front of the building, but it did not ignite, authorities said. A hazardous materials squad was dispatched to examine the contents of the liquid that was left behind, and there were no injuries, according to a call record. The man who brought the item to the building, identified by authorities as Jose F. Jovel, 54, was booked into federal custody, according to federal jail records. The US Attorney's Office said a criminal complaint was expected to be filed Tuesday, and that Jovel is a US citizen. Before the Los Angeles St. incident Monday firefighters responded to a fire inside an apartment in the 100 block of North Westmoreland Ave. in the Koreatown area around 4:00 a.m. That fire was extinguished, and it's now being investigated by local and federal agencies as a suspected arson, the sources said, as it is the apparent residence of the man arrested at the federal building.

3 homes in San Fernando Valley broken into overnight; search for suspects underway

Three homes in the San Fernando Valley were broken into overnight, triggering an investigation and a search for the suspects. Several suspects, only described as men, were involved in all three cases and the Los Angeles Police Department is looking into whether they're connected. The rash of break-ins started at a home on Topeka Drive in Tarzana around 7:40 p.m. Monday. According to the LAPD, someone was home at the time but police could not give further details about that incident. The other two homes were in Encino, an area that has been targeted before. Earlier this year, an "American Idol" executive and her husband were killed by an intruder in their Encino home. Less than an hour after the first break-in, around 8:20 p.m., suspects broke into a home on Ostrom Avenue. Shortly before 11 p.m., another home less than two miles away was hit on Alonzo Avenue. Police say that was the only home where property was taken, but it's unclear what that was or how much it was worth. Nobody was home in either of the Encino break-ins.

BWC: Man with lengthy criminal record fired at least 10 shots at Florida deputies in fatal shootout

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage Monday from a deputy shooting an armed man during an intense shootout in Goulds in September. The footage shows the deputy approach a Honda minivan parked outside a small grocery store at Southwest 216th Street and 122nd Avenue around 7:40 p.m. Sept. 16 with his gun drawn. The deputy, Sgt. Gilberto Crespo, responded to the area after receiving reports that the man was pointing a gun at people. Crespo, a 19-year-veteran on the department, repeatedly orders the man, 44-year-old Jose Pineda, Jr., to show his hands. Pineda responds, “I ain’t got no hands,” the footage shows. Crespo reiterated, “Let me see your [expletive] hands,” and again, Pineda countered with, “I ain’t got no hands.” The footage does not show a clear image of Pineda sitting in the driver’s seat of the van, but the deputy opens fire seconds later, at first advancing forward as he shoots, but then running backwards continuing to fire as gunfire is heard coming from the direction of the van, the footage shows. Crespo shoots more than 20 rounds at the vehicle, before taking cover behind a silver Chevy pickup truck parked next to Pineda’s van, the footage shows. Sound coming from the van indicates Pineda fired at least 10 shots at Crespo.
