BANNER

Neighbors,

Winter sure hit us fast this year, didn’t it? After the last two years of abnormally light snowfall, I dare to say that I’m a bit excited about the prospect of a snowy winter.

However, heavy snowfall brings about enhanced travel danger and a need for attentiveness to snow removal procedures. Now is a good time to brush up on relevant rules and resources. For road conditions, be sure to check MN511 [ [link removed] ] before heading over the river and through the woods.

In Golden Valley, parking is prohibited on public streets and alleys now until March 31 from 2 to 6 am daily. Parking is also prohibited on public streets after a snowfall of at least 2 inches until snow has stopped falling and the street has been plowed to the curb (or edge of the street if there is no curb).

In Robbinsdale, a snow emergency will automatically go into effect anytime there is a snowfall of at least two inches. During snow emergencies, parking is prohibited on public streets, highways, and alleys in the city and on property owned or leased by the city. Parking can resume once it has been plowed and the snow removed to the curb line.

Additionally, Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule is now in effect until April 30. This new law protects your heat from being shut off due to missed utility payments.

Cold Weather Rule

To ensure your service is safe from disconnection, you must make and keep a payment plan that you and your utility provider agree on. Minnesota landlords are required to keep rental units at a minimum of 68 degrees from October to April if the tenant does not control the thermostat.

We are committed to making sure everyone stays warm, healthy, and safe all winter long. More information is available on the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s website here [ [link removed] ].

Paid Leave begins January 1

The wait is nearly over; Paid Family Leave officially launches on January 1st. Passed under DFL leadership in 2023, workers will be able to access 12 weeks of paid medical leave for a serious health condition of their own, including pregnancy and recovery. The plan also provides up to 12 weeks of paid family leave to care for a new child, a seriously ill loved one, or for certain military or safety-related events, allowing a total of 20 weeks of combined leave per year if using both medical and family leave.

Last session, Republicans fought hard to delay and dismantle the law before it even went into effect. DFLers held the line because we know that we all deserve to be able to care for ourselves or our loved ones without the fear of sacrificing a paycheck or facing financial ruin.

The U.S. is the only developed country in the world that doesn’t guarantee some form of paid leave, leaving people to make impossible choices between a paycheck and caring for a new child, an aging parent, or their own serious health condition. Given the amount of economic uncertainty being passed down from the federal government, Paid Leave could not be coming at a better time.

Join me for a town hall on gun violence prevention

Tomorrow, I’ll be joining Rep. Cedrick Frazier for a town hall on gun violence prevention. Our community has been hit incredibly hard by the effects of gun violence this year. Like you, the gun violence crisis remains at the top of my mind. We can and must take action. Unfortunately, due to the divided legislature and Republicans’ unwillingness to address the crisis, a special session to work on common-sense gun violence prevention legislation never came to fruition. Despite this GOP blockade, we will continue to fight to make our communities safer for our kids.

Please RSVP to receive the location details and submit your questions here [ [link removed] ].
