![]() John, A garbage truck's worth of plastic enters the ocean every 45 seconds.1 At this rate, our future is going to be choked with piles of pollution. But the future isn't written in stone. This Giving Tuesday, we're working to give the gift of a cleaner, healthier future to our kids and grandkids by pushing back against the swelling tide of plastic pollution. It's going to take all of us. When we work together, we can win restrictions on the most wasteful forms of plastic, convince giant companies to reduce their use of plastic packaging, and more. Thank you, Faye Park John, Amazon ships more than 5 billion packages annually in the United States: The equivalent of about 17 parcels for every single person in America.1 That adds up to being a mountain of wasteful plastic packaging. It's the season of giving -- but shopping for gifts shouldn't deliver a pile of plastic waste to our doorstep. As a giant retailer, Amazon can have a giant impact on the plastic pollution problem. That's why this Giving Tuesday, we're focusing on convincing Amazon to reduce its use of wasteful plastic packaging. The United States is the world's largest plastic polluter.2 But it doesn't have to be this way. When we work together, we can make big progress towards a future beyond plastic -- and this is how we get there: With your support, we know we can convince Amazon to do the right thing. Two years ago, PIRG researchers and volunteers set out to discover whether or not Amazon packaging was actually being recycled. The answer? No -- almost none of the Amazon packaging we tracked actually ended up at recycling centers.3 After the discovery, supporters like you helped us call out Amazon's plastic waste by sending more than 138,000 petition signatures to the company, urging it to reduce single-use plastic in its shipments. And it worked. After our campaign, Amazon began phasing out padded plastic shipping envelopes and plastic air pillows.4,5 At PIRG, we know how to win. Our team of advocates and researchers has decades of experience pursuing common-sense solutions to the real problems facing our world, from cutting wasteful plastic to phasing out toxic pesticides. But the most important member of our team is you, John. We don't take a cent from corporations. Grassroots supporters like you fuel everything we do. This Giving Tuesday, double your impact to build a future beyond plastic with a matched gift. Thank you for your support, Faye Park Your donation will power our dedicated staff of organizers, policy experts and attorneys who drive all of our campaigns in the public interest, from banning toxic pesticides and moving us beyond plastic, to saving our antibiotics and being your consumer watchdog, to protecting our environment and our democracy. None of our work would be possible without the support of people just like you. |
