Jack,

Today, I want to introduce you to Gina Ortiz Jones, who is running for the U.S. House in Texas' 23rd Congressional District.

Gina is a fantastic candidate—a first-generation American and former Air Force intelligence officer who served under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." When elected, Gina will be the first Asian American and first openly LGBTQ person to represent Texas in Congress.

Gina first ran for this seat in 2018, and came within 1,000 votes of flipping the seat— and Hillary Clinton actually defeated Donald Trump in Texas-23 back in 2016. Gina can win this race, build on our House majority, and help change the face of leadership in Washington.

We asked Gina a few questions for our latest Off the Sidelines Candidate Spotlight. I hope you'll take the time to learn more about how she got into politics, the issues she's championing on the campaign trail, and the one piece of advice she would give her younger self!

And if you like what you read, please consider spliting a contribution between Off the Sidelines and Gina's campaign today.

Thank you,
Stefanie

Off the Sidelines: Tell us about yourself. Why did you decide to get off the sidelines and run for office?
Gina Ortiz Jones: As a first-generation American who was raised by a single mom and earned a four-year Air Force ROTC scholarship to attend college, I’ve been fortunate to live the American Dream. And, having spent nearly 15 years working in national security, to include deploying to Iraq as an Air Force intelligence officer, I’ve seen first-hand the importance of American leadership. Our country’s example and leadership matter — our country is special, and she’s worth fighting for.
OTS: Tell us where you're running and what your state is like.
Gina Ortiz Jones: I’m most grateful for the support and encouragement of voters in TX-23. It’s clear our message is resonating and giving people hope about what is possible with a representative willing to fight for them and for the issues they care about — from affordable health care, to addressing crushing student debt, to the ways we can build the infrastructure needed to close the gaps between our urban and rural communities.
OTS: What's one piece of advice you would give your younger self?
Gina Ortiz Jones: It’s the same advice I give to every person that asks: Be kind, work hard, and be so good they can’t ignore you.
