I’m sometimes asked why I believe that protecting undocumented immigrants is one of the most important issues facing America today. It’s a question I don’t mind answering — and it is a message that I have been constantly delivering since last January. I believe that the path to authoritarianism is being built on the backs of immigrants. And history teaches us that authoritarian governments often start testing the bounds of power by going after a specific and vulnerable population. Over time, unless they are stopped, they consolidate power in a way that threatens all our rights. It’s like a domino effect. One domino falls, and then the rest also fall, one by one. The Trump administration is doing everything it possibly can to knock that first domino down. Friends, it’s our job to ensure the first domino stays standing.
