Follow and Support MDAA ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ MDAA Alert: 75 Years Ago July 17, 2020 Mushroom cloud seconds after detonation during the Trinity Nuclear Test, on July 16. 1945. Dear Members and Friends, On July 16, 1945, the world was changed forever in White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. That day 75 years ago J. Robert Oppenheimer and Army Lieutenant General Leslie Groves stood alongside a group of scientists as they observed the first-ever testing of a nuclear weapon. One month later, that very weapon would be dropped in the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, killing over 200,000 people, and forever changing the world. Seventy-Five years ago, the United States shocked the world with the first atomic bomb. Now, a total of nearly 14,000 nuclear warheads exist. This number is spread across the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel, France, and North Korea, with more nations working to attain it or quickly capable of having it. Until a more credible and effective deterrent is created to replace the global security created by mutually assured destruction of nuclear weapons by the nuclear powers, we must approach living with nuclear weapons from every avenue available to mitigate and reduce the risk. We recognize the unthinkable becoming thinkable 75 years ago to end the last World War. We acknowledge as long as there are Nuclear Weapons there has to be a defense against them to defend Mankind against the irrationality of Mankind.
