Dear John,

A functional democracy depends on checks and balances as well as the due process of law. We’re fighting for these principles — and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Checks and balances prevent the government from making big mistakes. They keep presidents from starting wars or spending taxpayer money without asking the people’s representatives in Congress first.

Due process also protects us from big mistakes. It stops the government from locking people up or deporting them without a fair hearing in court, and it safeguards everyone’s freedom.

We’re standing up for these bedrock constitutional principles — checks and balances as well as due process — at a time when they’re under great attack. We need your support. John, can you donate now to help us keep presidential power in check?

DONATE NOW AND DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT

Your gift today will support our work combating presidential overreach. This year, we’ve fought for our democracy in critical court cases:

When the Trump administration instituted worldwide tariffs using emergency powers, we told the Supreme Court that the president can’t impose tariffs without congressional authorization and that the administration is using a fake emergency to try to get around the Constitution’s separation of powers. In oral arguments, some of the justices echoed the arguments in our brief.

When the Department of Justice sued Maine, Michigan, and New York to demand private voter data in an effort to undermine our elections, we filed motions to intervene on behalf of voters. States have the right to protect their citizens’ data.

When the administration invoked the Alien Enemies Act to carry out mass deportations, we supported successful litigation challenging the illegal use of this wartime power. As the litigation moves through the appeals process, we’ll continue to fight this overreach and advocate for everyone’s right to due process.

When the administration attempted to single-handedly rewrite election rules by requiring people to produce a passport or a similar document to vote, we partnered with allies to sue — and scored a decisive victory.

We will keep fighting for checks and balances and our Constitution. But we need your support to continue fighting these power grabs in the courts and calling on the public to stand up for American democracy.

A generous donor will match every dollar donated today, up to $250,000. That means your Giving Tuesday impact will be instantly doubled. Your gift is more than a contribution to fuel our legal and advocacy work — it’s an investment in protecting constitutional rights and the due process of law.

Help us stop the power grab.
