Hi John,
This Giving Tuesday, I’m asking you to help us build on a year of real, measurable progress for humanist and atheist representation in the United States. The Center for Freethought Equality set out to move our community from the margins to the mainstream — and this year, we proved just how possible that is.
The Congressional Freethought Caucus continues to grow, and our pipeline of openly humanist and atheist elected officials and candidates has never been stronger. In fact, we added six new openly humanist and atheist elected officials from talking to elected officials at our exhibit booth at the National League of Cities conference just last month, bringing our national total to over 130 elected officials who openly identify with our community.
And we’re not just adding names; we’re winning meaningful races. Here’s just a couple of our victories in last month’s election:
-
Erica Deuso was elected mayor of Downingtown, PA — becoming the state’s first openly transgender mayor and the first openly atheist person to hold that office.
-
Harvey Epstein, who is openly agnostic, won in a landslide for NYC Council District 2.
-
Dr. Marisa Sweeney flipped a Republican New Jersey Assembly seat for the first time since 1977 — and she did it as an agnostic atheist.
-
Dr. Mark Downey, a pediatrician with no religious affiliation, was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates.
These victories are not accidents. They’re the direct result of long-term investment in engaging our community in electoral politics.
And now we need your help to keep this momentum going.
Sincerely,
Howard Katz
Board President
