The rivers that weave their way through our National Parks are some of the most diverse and iconic in the country. Internationally renowned wetlands, glacial lakes, chalk streams and sensitive headwaters create a vibrant tapestry of habitats. Home to fish, insects and mammals, these rivers are the lifeblood of our National Parks.  

You’d expected them to be the cleanest, healthiest and best protected waterways in the UK, yet every lake, river and stream in England’s National Parks is polluted. 

This week, you can make a difference to National Park rivers. Through The Big Give Christmas Challenge, every pound you donate between 12 noon today, Tuesday 2 December, and 12 noon on Tuesday 9 December, will be worth double thanks to some of our most generous donors.

Did you know?

  • Over half of National Park rivers are classed as ‘failing’. That means more than 1 in 2 rivers in National Parks do not meet basic health standards. 

  • Not a single water body in an English National Park is in good overall health. 

  • Sewage works inside the National Parks are spilling sewage for twice as long as outside National Parks.
