Email from Womens Legal Education and Action Fund Inc. Support gender equality and justice this Giving Tuesday!   John, Thanks to Lenczner Slaght and their ReferToHer™ program, the first $17,500 donated today will be matched, doubling the impact of your contribution in our fight for the rights of women, girls, trans, and non-binary people! Can we count on your support today? In 2025, LEAF marked 40 years of advancing gender equality in Canada. That’s four decades of landmark victories, courageous advocacy, and collective resolve. This year, your support has made these victories happen: Standing our ground to ensure that trans and gender-diverse children can be their authentic selves by challenging the pronoun policies that could put children at risk. In UR Pride, LEAF successfully argued that even when governments invoke the notwithstanding clause to shield discriminatory laws from review, courts must retain the power to declare Charter violations. Advocating for defending sex-worker rights in R. v. Kloubakov. Though the Supreme Court of Canada ultimately dismissed the appeal, LEAF intervened to emphasize the importance of taking an intersectional, substantive equality-based analysis when considering how Canada’s sex-work laws affect people’s freedom and security. Our work to destigmatize sex work and foreground the perspectives of sex worker organizations is far from over. Hosting the Advancing Social Justice Through Law conference in Winnipeg, addressing violence against Indigenous women and girls in Manitoba and advancing the Calls for Justice from the MMIWG Inquiry. Through our newly launched Bridging Justices report, evolving from Avenues to Justice (2023), LEAF is advancing restorative and transformative approaches to sexual violence that seek healing where the criminal system too often fails. What your donations will make possible next year: Appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada in Attorney General of Quebec v. Luamba, a racial-profiling case where a Black Haitian student was detained three separate times without reason. We will urge the Court to affirm that discrimination is shaped by the intersecting impacts of gender, class, and race. Continuing to build knowledge through the Strengthening Community Capacity Project, which helps gender-based violence sector organizations increase their capacity to push for systemic change in the courts and empower the communities they serve. Further identifying barriers to economic security for feminized labour in the care sector through the Valuing the Care Economy Project. Strengthening the capacity of our local branches and growing our Public Legal Education Program to reach more people so that they are aware of their rights! LEAF’s essential work is only possible through the generosity of our donors and funding partners. Will you donate today to double your impact and help LEAF reach our $35,000 goal? Thank you for standing with us in the pursuit of gender justice!
