Gun violence prevention has always been an important issue to me, John, and one that has defined so much of my life.
Hearing the stories of survivors, the families who have lost loved ones, and the communities forever changed by gun violence has always taken an emotional toll on me. But it has also shaped my career and the work I’ve chosen to do.
Before I joined March For Our Lives, I worked in the Biden-Harris White House, where I had the privilege of witnessing a historic step forward. I’ll never forget being in the Rose Garden as President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Congressman Maxwell Frost announced the establishment of the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
It was a moment that felt deeply significant because it was the result of the tireless work of young people across the country fighting for change, many of whom were right there in the audience that day.
I was honored to work with the Biden administration’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention. We helped to lift up the stories of the survivors and families who courageously turned their grief into action. We invited parents, survivors, and advocates to the White House to meet with administration officials. Their voices weren’t just heard, but were listened to at the highest levels of government, in the People’s House.
Now, at March For Our Lives, I see that same courage every single day. The young people leading this movement remind me that change doesn’t come from the top down, but from the ground up, by those brave enough to demand it. Their persistence, their creativity, and their hope are what keep this movement alive.
