A code-red crisis is unfolding before our very eyes: Since 1970, we’ve lost three billion birds—one in every four—and the latest data from the 2025 State of the Birds report shows these declines are continuing across all habitats. For the Mountain Plover and 41 other Red Alert Tipping Point species, the situation is especially dire. Having lost more than half their populations over the past 50 years, these birds’ populations are perilously low and continue to experience steep declines.
