Meet Our New Deputy Director

Ali Nichols Headshot

We are proud to officially announce that longtime Production Team Lead Ali Nichols has assumed the role of Deputy Director here at the Texas Film Commission. Ali brings fifteen years’ experience with the Texas Film Commission to the position, having begun her career with the office in 2009 as a production intern.

In the time since, she has scouted hundreds of Texas locations, worked closely with Writers, Directors, Producers, and Studio Executives to bring numerous productions to Texas, and managed the Media Production Development Zone program working with communities to bring media infrastructure to the state. She has presented at film festivals, conferences, and city council meetings, all of which have helped to prepare her to take on this new role.

As Deputy Director, Ali will continue her work assisting productions as they navigate filming in Texas, while also growing the staff and helping to evolve the work of the Texas Film Commission to facilitate more projects and programs.

On the Road Again with the TFC

On the Road

We love Austin, but it's always nice to hit the road and spread the word about everything the Texas Film Commission can do for the Lone Star State's moving image industries professionals. Here's just a few of the places we've visited recently:

  • The TFC wrapped up the highly successful "TMIIIP on the Road" tour as Devin Jones, Willita Mahone and Cassandra Ariztegui made their way up to Fort Worth to present to attendees at the Lone Star Film Festival. TFC Director Stephanie Whallon presented to attendees at the Amarillo Film Fest.
  • Cassandra and Ashley Robinson visited Houston and took part in the Filmmakers in Focus panel discussion alongside local filmmaker Isaac Yowman, Houston Film Commissioner Alfred Cervantes and Houston City Controller Chris Hollins.
  • TFC Deputy Director Ali Nichols and Michelle Habecker attended the Round Top Film Festival, where they participated in a panel discussion on the benefits of filming in Texas.
  • Michelle also took part in the Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC) Annual Conference in San Antonio.
  • Matt Miller visited Richardson, where he took part in the Industry Giants conference.
  • Michelle, Ashley and Robert Rodriguez (our Robert Rodriguez, to be clear), took a trip out to Odessa to host our latest Film Friendly Texas workshop.
  • Devin and Alex Payne met and mingled with industry representatives at the annual AICP Awards in Dallas.
  • Finally, here in Austin, Stephanie participated in the LBJ Foundation's "The State of Texas Film" discussion, alongside filmmakers Iliana Sosa and Jeff Nichols.

Congratulations to Houston Film Commissioner Alfred Cervantes!

We'd like to take a moment to extend a Texas-sized congratulations to our colleague Alfred Cervantes on his 30-year anniversary with the Houston Film Commission. Alfred has been a stalwart representative for Space City's media production industries and we think that's well worth celebrating!

Want to get in touch with Alfred? You can find his contact info, alongside all our other Regional Film Commissioners, at the link below.
