In college, I studied medicine. I went on to publish dozens of papers, articles, and book chapters on illness. I eventually realized that studying disease wasn’t enough. I wanted to solve the root cause of these issues.
So, I pursued a path of public service to disrupt the status quo. As Detroit’s Health Director, I led efforts to keep lead out of public schools and provide free glasses to any child in Detroit city schools who needs them. At the Wayne County Health Department, we installed 100 air quality monitors so residents can see real-time data about the air they breathe.
Here’s what shook me, John:
When I’d drive the 45 minutes from my house in Ann Arbor to my office in downtown Detroit, I’d cross almost a decade of life expectancy.
In Ann Arbor, where I’m raising my daughters, life expectancy is 80 years. In downtown Detroit, just down the road, it’s nine years less.
That’s nine fewer years to laugh with your grandchildren. To grow old with your partner. To build the life you deserve.
I’m running for Senate because this kind of injustice is baked into our political system — and it doesn’t have to be.
We can build a government that invests in public health, takes on corporate greed, and creates real opportunities for every Michigander, no matter their zip code.
But we have to fight for it.
