Governor DeWine, Dayton Police Announce Enhanced Violent Crime Reduction Efforts
Dayton Crime [ [link removed] ]
(DAYTON, Ohio)— Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined state, local, and federal officials in Dayton this morning to announce an investment of additional state resources to support current violence reduction operations by the Dayton Police Department (DPD), Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), and federal partners.
The violent crime reduction initiatives are intelligence-driven operations in areas of Dayton where data shows repeat violent offenders are committing the most crime.
The enhanced collaboration now includes new support from the following state entities:
* *Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center (ONIC)*: ONIC criminal intelligence analysts are working in partnership with analysts in DPD’s Real Time Crime Center to pinpoint the high-crime areas where violent crime reduction initiatives would make the most impact. Teams are also gathering intelligence to locate wanted individuals who are known to be dangerous, repeat violent offenders.
* *Ohio Investigative Unit (OIU)*: OIU is increasing its enforcement of Ohio's alcohol laws in high-crime areas of Dayton. Agents will focus on taking enforcement action on those who illegally carry weapons and commit other crimes on liquor establishment premises.
* *Ohio Adult Parole Authority (APA)*: Parole officers are responsible for supervising adult felony offenders who have completed their prison sentences and are released from custody on a period of post-release control. The APA will put added focus on locating offenders in Dayton who have absconded from supervision and are in violation of post-release control conditions. APA officers will also work in collaboration with partners to increase unannounced visits with former inmates who are at a high risk of reoffending.
"We are using the combined expertise of state, local, and federal partners to specifically focus in on the repeat violent offenders who continuously disregard the law and illegally carry guns in the city of Dayton," said Governor DeWine. "This work is already underway, and it will be carried out over the long term to regularly go after the individuals who are causing the most problems citywide."
This new state support is in addition to the longstanding partnerships between DPD, OSHP, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and U.S. Marshal's Office. Cases are prosecuted by the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office and U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio.
In addition to helping local law enforcement with focused patrols, OSHP’s Aviation Unit supports these initiatives from the sky, eliminating the need for dangerous traffic pursuits. In situations where suspects flee, the aviation team guides on-ground officers to their location and flags any evidence, such as illegally possessed firearms, that suspects have attempted to discard.

“Safety is more than a statistic; it’s a commitment,” said Colonel Charles A. Jones, Patrol superintendent. “Our partnership in Dayton is focused on those driving violent crime so families can live without fear.”
As part of today's announcement, Ohio Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Andy Wilson also unveiled a new DPS website that catalogs felony arrests made as part of violent crime reduction operations across the state. The website provides status updates on specific arrests to help the public follow these cases as they proceed through the state and federal courts.

"This new website will make it easier for the public to track these cases and watch the criminal justice system at work," said Director Wilson. "These data-driven, intelligence-based operations are focused on the relatively small group of people committing crimes over and over again. When we get these individuals out of the community, we know we'll be preventing future violence."
New data from the Ohio Department of Public Safety (DPS) spanning 1974-2023 continues to find that a small number of individuals are responsible for most violent crimes and weapons violations each year.
According to DPS's Office of Criminal Justice Services, less than 1% of Ohio's adult population was arrested for a violent crime and/or weapons charge each year, and the majority of arrests were of repeat offenders. Of arrests for violent crimes, around 1/3 of adults arrested between 1974-2023 had been arrested five times or more. Approximately half of all arrests on weapons violations were of adults previously arrested five times or more.

Statewide, operations supported by state resources have led to nearly 500 felony arrests and the seizure of more than 150 illegally possessed firearms in 2025.
