Despite the fact that ICE is already tormenting families and destroying communities, the organization is taking it to the next level by training individuals through a new ‘Citizens Academy.’ The name alone is a dog whistle to white nationalism and xenophobia.
The Citizens Academy is a 6-week intensive program to deceptively provide ‘transparency’ into the inner workings of the agency. However, with courses in ‘defensive tactics, firearms familiarization and targeted arrests,’ the true intent certainly is transparent.
ICE spokesperson, Nicole Alberico, claims ‘the misunderstanding, anger and confusion of what the agency does on a daily basis is exactly why the Academy is needed.'
But we know exactly what ICE does on a daily basis. It locks people in cages, separates families and strips away basic human rights. There is no misunderstanding, which is exactly why this program is a terribly inhumane concept, stemming from a terribly inhumane agency.
We’ve said it before and we will say it again…
It’s time to Abolish ICE.
The Citizens’ Academy program is especially troubling in the wake of calls to dismantle systemic racism, where members of our communities are already being racially profiled, wrongfully accused and murdered in broad daylight.
